Canine rabies in Bali: update as of June 2014

The first case of rabies in Bali was reported in November 2008, in the south of the Island where most tourist resorts are located. Since then, canine rabies has been an ongoing problem in Bali.
In the last 5 months, between January and May 2014, the Animal Health Service has recorded a total of 36 confirmed cases of rabies in dogs in Bali . Cases were reported spread from the following areas of Bali:

  • Buleleng 11 cases, 
  • Jembrana 10 cases, 
  • Gianyar 5 cases, 
  • Klungkung 4 cases, 
  • Tabanan 3 cases, 
  • Karangasem 2 cases
  • Bangli 1 cases.
No cases have been reported for Badung and Denpasar.
The rabies situation has improved in Bali but travelers should be aware of the ongoing risk and avoid animal contact and report any bites.
