Health and stress management for Expats

In the last few months, we've heard from the newspapers a few cases of suicide among tourists in their villas or hotels. The cases are still under investigation by the local police, but after seeing and hearing about all those cases, we can say that those tourists might fell into a condition named "STRESS". This might be due to lack of preparation and knowledge that put them into risks for developing the psychological stress. Some of the expats or travelers can manage it, but some of them cannot, and without proper help the stress can get worse.
Below are some tips that might be helpful in preventing you from getting stress in Bali.

  1. If you just arrived in Bali, remember that it takes time to adjust to a new culture. You cannot expect to fit it right away.
  2. Stress tends to occur when you are tired. So make sure to get enough rest and have regular holidays. Working all the hours can increase the risk of burnout.
  3. Moderate exercises (e.g. walking) are good for both mental and physical health. Do it the way you enjoy it, and remember to do it as safe as possible
  4. Avoid too much alcohol, caffeine or nicotine, as they can increase the symptoms of stress
  5. Drink plenty of water, eat balance diet, and avoid excessive exposure to sun.
  6. If you become ill, take enough time off to recuperate, rather than continue to work when you're unwell
  7. If other people have unrealistic expectations on you, discuss the situation with them. Make it clear and do not be ambiguous.
  8. Relationship problems can be very stressful, especially when you are cut off from your normal circle of family and friends. Speak with someone you trust and see if you can resolve it. Try to give encouragement to others when possible.
  9. Maintain regular contact with friends at home, as this can make life more pleasant
  10. Some people find it helpful to record their thoughts and feelings in a journal or letter. The problems may go away as you write
  11. Remember that it is completely normal to experience some signs of stress when living in a different culture. Most expats will have problems concentrating or sleeping, unusually irritable, feel tearful or low, changes appetite, etc. If you experience some of these, remind yourself that it is a normal part of the adjustment process. Let people know that you are feeling under stress.
  12. Try to maintain your sense of humor and have fun!
